Dr. Nikhilesh Bhattacharjee was born on April 1, 1945. He completed his MBBS from Gauhati Medical College in 1966. He did his MS General Surgery in 1971 and MCh Pediatric Surgery in 1973 from P. G. I., Chandigarh. Following this, he served at M. P. Shah Medical College, Jamnagar, from 1975 to 1976. He joined B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, in 1976 as an Assistant Professor and continued working there up to 1983. He started the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, which was the first of its kind in Gujarat and served as Head of the Department.

Dr. Bhattacharjee joined N. H. L. Municipal Medical College, V. S. Hospital, in 1988 as a Hon. Assistant Professor. He retired in 2010 as Professor and Head of the Department. He was also involved in private practice. He was a very good teacher, an excellent surgeon, and very caring for his patients. He trained a number of pediatric surgeons and was popular among his MCh Pediatric surgery trainees.

Dr. Bhattacharjee had a thrombotic cardiovascular stoke in 2017. This got complicated and he developed intraventricular hemorrhage which needed craniotomy and decompression. His health and neurological condition again deteriorated in the last 4–5 months. He succumbed to COVID-19 on August 30, 2020.

Dr. Bhattacharjee is survived by his two sons Dr. Gaurav Bhattacharjee who is a public health professional and Mr. Saurabh Bhattacharjee who is a civil engineer. Both are presently settled in the USA.

I, on behalf of the IAPS family, would like to covey our heartfelt condolences to the family. May his soul attain Sadgati.
