Dr. Haradhan Chatterjee, retired Professor of Surgery from JIPMER, Pondicherry attained his heavenly abode on November 7 th , 2014. Born on 8 th October 1932 in Singhbhum district in Bihar, Dr. Chatterjee graduated from Calcutta Medical College in 1956. He joined JIPMER, Pondicherry as Lecturer in Surgery in 1959. He did his M.S. (Surgery) from University of Madras in 1965. He was drafted to serve in the Armed Forces during the Bangladesh war and released after 18 months. He continued as a Faculty member for nearly 32 years in JIPMER. He qualified in the super specialty MNAMS (Pediatric Surgery) in 1982 and was elected as a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences in 1991. He was very scientific tempered and had more than 70 publications both in national and international journals to his credit.
He was instrumental in setting up the Department of Pediatric Surgery in JIPMER in 1975. As an astute clinician, compassionate surgeon and inspirational teacher, he motivated several of his students to specialize in Pediatric Surgery including the undersigned. He had a fantastic personality with simplicity and humane approach in every aspect. He retired from JIPMER on superannuation in 1990 and subsequently worked as the Principal of PSG Medical College, Coimbatore (1991-92) and Professor of Surgery in JSS Medical College Mysore (1992-98). He remained academically active throughout his life. He was a member of Association of Surgeons of India, Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, Indian Medical Association and was President of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry chapter of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons.
He is survived by his wife and two sons, one of them being a pediatric and the other intensive care anesthesiologist. May his soul rest in peace.
