Pediatric surgeons of India are saddened with the sudden death of Dr. Nitin Dhende, who died at the young age of 47 years after a short illness of lung cancer with liver metastasis in Mumbai on Sunday, May 29, 2016.

He will be remembered for his love for laparoscopy, especially in the field of single incision laparoscopic pediatric surgery. He was gentle, soft spoken, knowledgeable, an excellent surgeon, and popular among patients. He was full of ideas, a live wire, a very gifted, and accomplished surgeon.

He completed schooling from Satara in CBSE board. He joined Miraj Medical College in 1988 and passed examinations with distinctions in anatomy, forensic medicine, and general surgery, during the first, second, and third years of MBBS, respectively.

He completed general surgery in 1996 and joined pediatric surgery super specialty at Topiwala National Medical College and B. Y. L. Nair Hospital in 1999. He joined at the Pediatric Surgery Department of Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals in 2001 as Lecturer and was promoted to the post of Associate Professor and Head of the Department in 2008. He continued in the department till August 2015, when he was invited to join the International Modern Hospital in Dubai, UAE.

He was a visionary and had a wish to introduce liver transplant in Government setting for the poor children of India. To accomplish this vision, he did liver transplant fellowship from ASAN Medical Centre, Seoul, Korea. He also visited the United States to fine tune his knowledge in this field. The Department of Pediatric Surgery at Grant Medical College, Mumbai, got ISO 9001-2000 certified under his guidance. This was the first department to get ISO certificate in the entire Government setup in the state of Maharashtra.

He has authored many presentations in national and international conferences. He has published more than 24 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has been invited as faculty for many conferences and workshops. He attended many free pediatric surgical camps in Gujarat at Bhachu and Rajkot. He was also associated with "Humanitarian and Welfare Research Foundation" as a medical advisor.

He was part of the organizing team for the workshops organized in 2001 and 2004 in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Grant Medical College and Sir J. J. Group of Hospitals. He served as an Honorary Secretary in the "Maharashtra Chapter of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons" for one term, and he was elected in the present Executive Committee of "Pediatric Endoscopic Surgeons - India section of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons" as a west zone member.

He is survived by his wife Dr. Khyati Shroff, general surgeon by profession, son Meet, and mother. We pray the almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the family members to bear the loss.
